Tree Work
Back Cut Height Calculator
The back cut height above the apex of the notch determines hinge behavior. Too low and the tree can kick back; too high and the hinge tears. Standard practice is 1-2 inches above the notch apex.

FAQ
Why above the notch apex? +
If the back cut is at or below the apex, the tree can slip backwards off the stump as it falls — a "kickback" or "barber chair" event. Always cut high enough to maintain the step.
When do I need wedges? +
Anytime the tree has back-lean or you cannot guarantee gravity will pull it forward through the notch. Wedges drive the trunk forward and prevent settling back onto the bar.
What is a bore cut release? +
Plunge through the trunk behind the notch, leaving an uncut "back strap." Cut the strap last, after wedges are set, to control the moment of release on heavy or back-leaning trees.
