Bore Cut Calculator
Bore cutting (plunging the bar straight through the trunk behind the notch) lets you set the hinge first, then sever the back strap last for a controlled release. Use it for heavy forward lean, hollow trees, or any time you need a planned release.

FAQ
When do I need a bore cut? +
Heavy forward lean (barber-chair risk), hollow trunks, removals near targets requiring exact timing, or any tree where you want to set the hinge first and release later.
What is the back strap? +
The wood left behind the bore cut between your plunge and the back of the trunk. It holds the tree upright until you sever it last. About 10% of trunk diameter is standard.
What if my bar is too short? +
Bore from both sides. Plunge cut from one side, withdraw, then plunge from the other side to meet your first cut. Make sure they meet — incomplete severance kills control.
