What ratio feels right? +
Roughly 1.5:1 (width:height) is the classical sweet spot. 1:1 is cathedral. 2:1 starts to feel low. 3:1 is oppressive — bunker territory.
Should ceiling height match the room's main use? +
Yes. Intimate (dining, bedrooms): 8-9'. Living, kitchen: 9-10'. Great room / large open plan: 10-12'+. Entry / two-story foyer: 18-24'.
Code minimums? +
IRC R305 sets habitable rooms at 7'-0" min ceiling height. Hallways and bathrooms can be 6'-8".
