FAQ
Why derate the chart? +
Manufacturer chart capacities assume ideal conditions: level ground, outriggers fully extended, no wind, perfect rigging. Most operators run 75-85% of chart to leave margin for real-world variables.
Why does radius matter so much? +
A crane lifting 25,000 lb at 30-ft radius might only lift 8,000 lb at 60-ft radius on the same boom. Stability and structural limits drop fast as you reach further from center.
What about boom angle? +
Higher boom angles (closer to vertical) give more capacity. Below 30° from horizontal, most cranes are at their structural limit regardless of capacity chart.
Heads up: ClutchCalcs gives you fast, accurate results — but always sanity-check critical decisions (medical, financial, structural) with a professional.
