FAQ
Common densities (g/mL)? +
Water = 1.00, ice = 0.92, oil = 0.91 (floats), aluminum = 2.70, iron = 7.87, gold = 19.32, lead = 11.34.
Why does ice float? +
Water expands when it freezes — H2O molecules form a rigid crystalline structure with more space between them. Density drops from 1.00 to 0.92.
