FAQ
Why is this different from the bag chart? +
Pet food bag charts overestimate by 15-30% because they target the most active version of each weight class. Most dogs (apartment-dwelling, walks-only) need significantly less.
Should I feed once or twice a day? +
Twice for most adults — better digestion, less hunger. Three times for puppies. Once for some seniors with health issues, on vet advice.
What is RER? +
Resting Energy Requirement: the calories a dog burns just existing, no exercise. Maintenance Energy = RER × activity multiplier. AAFCO and most vet schools use this calc.
Free-feeding vs scheduled? +
Scheduled is recommended for most dogs (prevents obesity, helps housebreaking, reveals appetite changes as health signals). Free-feed only ideal-weight cats really.
Heads up: ClutchCalcs gives you fast, accurate results — but always sanity-check critical decisions (medical, financial, structural) with a professional.
