When should I just replace? +
If a 12-year hydrotest costs $30 and a new extinguisher is $45, often cheaper to replace. Tags on the bottle should match the latest service — if missing, it's out of service.
Disposable extinguishers? +
Some smaller residential ABC units (under 4 lb) are non-rechargeable. Manufacture date + 12 years = scrap and replace. Check the label.
DOT date stamp? +
Cylinders have a manufacture date stamped on the neck. That's the legal start of all service intervals.
