FAQ
Why so much weight difference? +
A live tree is 30-50% water by weight. That water evaporates over months of drying. Hickory loses about 20% of its weight; soft maple loses over 30%.
When does the difference matter? +
Always for rigging and crane work — you cut down trees that are wet. For firewood, splitting, and milling weight estimates, seasoned numbers are the right ones.
What about partially dead trees? +
Standing dead with intact bark stays surprisingly heavy (within 10-20% of green). Bark-off or punky wood is closer to seasoned weight. Always estimate up if you are not sure.
