Tree Work
Hinge Width Calculator
The hinge controls the falling tree until it hits the ground. Too thick and it will not break; too thin and it snaps early. Enter the tree diameter and species class for the recommended hinge.

FAQ
Why does species matter? +
Brittle hardwoods (oak, hickory) snap if the hinge is too thick. Flexible softwoods (pine, cedar) bend further before failing. Match hinge thickness to wood class.
What about rotten or hollow trees? +
If you suspect heart rot, increase the hinge to about 15% of diameter to compensate for the cross-section you cannot count on. Better yet — set rigging and bring it down in pieces.
How long should the hinge be? +
About 80% of the tree diameter (across the trunk). Trimming the hinge corners ("Coos Bay") narrows it on each end to release cleanly without barber-chairing.
