Lean Angle Calculator

Even a 5° lean shifts the fall path noticeably. Enter the lean angle and tree height to see lateral offset, plus the side load that needs to be countered with wedges or a pull line.

FAQ

How much side lean can I correct with hinge bias? +
A thicker hinge on the lean side ("Dutchman") can pull the fall path 5-15° away from the lean direction. Past that, you need a pull line or you accept the fall direction.
What is barber chair? +
When a heavily forward-leaning tree splits vertically up the trunk during the back cut because tension builds faster than the saw can release it. Bore cut release prevents this.
Why measure from top of tree? +
Pull lines and rope are set high in the tree (often 2/3 of total height). The closer to the top, the less force needed to counter the lean — leverage works in your favor.
