FAQ
Why green wood weight? +
A tree you are cutting is full of water. Green oak weighs ~62 lb/ft³ vs ~48 lb/ft³ after seasoning. For rigging and crane work, always use green weight as your design number.
Is the truncated cone formula accurate? +
Within 10% for most logs. Heavy butt swell or significant taper changes that — measure at multiple points and use the largest reasonable estimate.
What about lateral branches? +
This calculates the main log only. Branches still attached add significant weight — typically 15-25% for a fully-leafed canopy. Strip branches before estimating, or use the tree weight estimator instead.
Heads up: ClutchCalcs gives you fast, accurate results — but always sanity-check critical decisions (medical, financial, structural) with a professional.
