FAQ
Should I tip on tax? +
Etiquette says no — tip the pre-tax subtotal. In practice, most people tip on the total bill including tax. The difference on a $50 dinner is about $0.40 — not worth stressing about.
No-tip culture coming back? +
Some restaurants have moved to service-included or "hospitality fee" models, but they remain rare in the US. Standard tipping is 18-22% in 2026, up from 15-18% a decade ago.
What about catering / private chef? +
15-20% on the food bill, OR $50-100 per service person if the gratuity is not already on the contract. Check the contract first.
Heads up: ClutchCalcs gives you fast, accurate results — but always sanity-check critical decisions (medical, financial, structural) with a professional.
