What's normal evaporation? +
A typical residential pool in summer loses 1/4" per day. Phoenix or Vegas in July can hit 1/2"+. Cold climates in winter: under 1/10" per day.
How does wind affect evap? +
Linear — double the wind, roughly double the evap rate. A pool in a wind-tunnel between houses loses way more than a sheltered one.
Bucket test? +
Float a bucket on the steps, fill it to match the pool level, leave 24 hr. If the bucket and pool drop equally, evap. If pool drops more, leak.
A solar cover really saves that much? +
Yes — 70–95% evap reduction is real. Pays for itself in one summer through water + chemical savings, especially in dry climates.
