FAQ
Why is a helmet not a load number? +
Hard hats are tested for impact (ANSI Z89.1) — vertical strike resistance. They are not designed to bear weight and cannot rescue a fallen climber.
Shock-absorbing lanyard max? +
Per OSHA 1910.140 and ANSI Z359, 1,800 lb is the limit for max arrest force on the body. Anything above that and you are looking at injuries even if the gear holds.
How do I size for shock loads? +
Use the dynamic load calculator to estimate peak force, then check it against the gear MBS — not the WLL. The WLL already includes the design factor.
Heads up: ClutchCalcs gives you fast, accurate results — but always sanity-check critical decisions (medical, financial, structural) with a professional.
