Pool Construction
Pump Turnover Rate Calculator
Is the pump big enough? Pool gallons ÷ pump GPM ÷ 60 = hours to turn the water once. Run two turnovers per day minimum.
FAQ
Why 2 turnovers a day? +
Industry standard. One turnover doesn't sanitize the water uniformly — corners and steps get poor circulation. Two turnovers is the residential gold standard.
My GPM rating is the pump curve at zero TDH — true GPM is lower? +
Yes. Actual flow at typical pool plumbing (60-80 ft TDH) is 60-75% of rated flow. Use the pump curve for accurate numbers.
Variable speed pumps cut cost how much? +
75–85% reduction in pump electricity is typical. Running at lower RPM for longer dramatically beats a single-speed pump running at full speed.
Most efficient strategy? +
Run a VSP at low speed continuously, or at least 16-20 hours/day. Constant low flow is gentler on equipment than starting/stopping a 2HP single-speed.
Heads up: ClutchCalcs gives you fast, accurate results — but always sanity-check critical decisions (medical, financial, structural) with a professional.
