Steel Weight Calculator

Steel weight matters more than people think — it determines shipping cost, what kind of equipment you need to move the material, and whether the floor or rack you're putting it on can actually support it. A 10-ft length of 2x2 × 1/4" steel angle weighs 33 lb; a 10-ft length of 4x4 × 1/4" wall HSS tube weighs 130 lb. This calculator computes the weight of any standard steel shape — round bar, square bar, flat bar/plate, round tube, square tube — based on dimensions and length, using mild steel's 0.2836 lb/in³ density. Returns pounds and kilograms.

How weights are calculated

Weight = volume × density. Mild steel density: 0.2836 lb/in³ (7.85 g/cm³). Volume for each shape:

  • Round bar: π × (D/2)² × L
  • Square bar: W² × L
  • Flat bar / plate: W × T × L
  • Round tube: π × [(OD/2)² – (OD/2 – wall)²] × L
  • Square tube (HSS): [W² – (W – 2 × wall)²] × L

Worked example: a 10-ft length of 2" × 1/4" flat bar. Volume = 2 × 0.25 × 120 in = 60 in³. Weight = 60 × 0.2836 = 17 lb. Or with the same flat bar in 12-ft: 20.4 lb.

Density by material

  • Mild / carbon steel: 0.2836 lb/in³ (the calculator's default)
  • Stainless steel (304, 316): 0.289 lb/in³ (~2% heavier than mild)
  • Tool steel: 0.283-0.285 lb/in³ (similar to mild)
  • Aluminum (6061): 0.0975 lb/in³ (~34% of steel)
  • Brass: 0.306 lb/in³
  • Copper: 0.323 lb/in³
  • Lead: 0.41 lb/in³

For stainless, multiply this calculator's result by 1.02. For aluminum, multiply by 0.344 (it's about a third the weight of steel for the same dimensions).

How to use this calculator

  1. Shape: round bar, square bar, flat bar/plate, round tube, or square tube.
  2. Width or diameter: outer dimension in inches.
  3. Thickness or 2nd dimension: for plate/flat bar.
  4. Length in feet.
  5. Wall thickness: for tubing (round or square).
  6. Output: weight in pounds and kilograms.
  7. For non-steel materials, calculate as steel and apply the density ratio above.

Common scenarios

Shop project: 6-ft length of 1" round bar. Volume = π × 0.5² × 72 = 56.5 in³. Weight = 16 lb. Easy to carry one-handed.

Welding table: 4'×8' plate of 1/4" steel. Volume = 48 × 96 × 0.25 = 1,152 in³. Weight = 327 lb. Need two people + a furniture dolly to move.

Trailer frame: 20-ft length of 3" × 3" × 3/16" wall HSS tube. Cross-section = 3² – (3 – 0.375)² = 9 – 6.89 = 2.11 in². Length 240". Volume = 506 in³. Weight = 144 lb. Tube steel is much lighter per linear foot than solid for the same outer dimensions.

FAQ

Why does weight matter on a fabrication job? +
Shipping rates (LTL freight is priced by weight), crane and forklift capacity, fall-protection rigging ratings, structural connections (bolt size and weld length), and trailer load limits all scale with weight. Underestimating steel weight on a job site is how people get hurt; overestimating costs you money on equipment.
How do I figure weight of structural shapes (I-beams, angles, channels)? +
Each structural shape has a tabulated weight per linear foot (from AISC steel manual or supplier catalogs). E.g. W8x18 = 18 lb/ft. C6x10.5 = 10.5 lb/ft. L4x4x3/8 angle = 9.8 lb/ft. Multiply by length in feet. This calculator handles round/square/flat/tubular shapes; structural shapes need the published per-foot weights.
What's the difference between HSS and pipe? +
HSS (Hollow Structural Section, sometimes called "tube steel") is square or rectangular with sharp corners and is specified by outside dimensions plus wall thickness. Pipe is round, specified by nominal pipe size and schedule. A 4" Schedule 40 pipe has 4.500" OD and 0.237" wall; very different from "4\" round tube\" which would be 4.000" OD.
What's mild steel vs A36 vs 1018? +
Mild steel is a general term for low-carbon steel (less than 0.3% carbon). A36 is a structural steel grade with specific tensile strength specs (36 ksi yield). 1018 is a specific grade defined by chemistry, commonly used in machining. Density is essentially identical across all mild steel grades.
Why is stainless denser than mild? +
The nickel and chromium content in austenitic stainless (304, 316) adds about 2% to the density. Practically, weight estimates for stainless can use the mild steel number plus 2% — within typical fabrication tolerance.
Can I use this for non-rectangular plate? +
For a triangular or trapezoidal plate, compute the actual surface area, multiply by thickness for volume, multiply by density (0.2836 lb/in³). For circular plate, use π × (D/2)² × thickness × density. For irregular shapes, break into rectangles and triangles and sum.
What's the weight of common steel sheet? +
1/16" (16 ga) plate: 2.55 lb/sq ft. 1/8" (11 ga): 5.1 lb/sq ft. 3/16" (7 ga): 7.65 lb/sq ft. 1/4" plate: 10.2 lb/sq ft. 3/8" plate: 15.3 lb/sq ft. 1/2" plate: 20.4 lb/sq ft. Easy reference: a 4'x8' sheet of 1/4" plate = 326 lb.
How are tubes — round vs square — selected for structural work? +
Square tube has more bending strength than round tube of equivalent material area, in the bending direction parallel to a wall. Round tube has equal strength in all directions and resists buckling under axial compression slightly better. Most racks, trailers, and rough-built structural items use square tube; high-load gusseted designs sometimes use round.
